Press Room >I-40 Rock Slide Detour – Please call us if you need additional directions, or if we can be of assistance! Interstate 40 in western North Carolina -- one of the state's key trucking routes and one of the chief roads used by visitors and others traveling to and from the mountains, Tennessee and beyond – could be closed for up to three months after a rockslide buried the highway under a mountain of rubble on October 25th, 2009. The NC Division of Tourism has placed a travel advisory on VisitNC.com to alert travelers about detours. The last exit open on I-40 westbound is Exit 20 at U.S. 276 to Maggie Valley. The VisitNC.com site suggests that from Asheville, travelers are advised to take Interstate 26 west to Johnson City, Tenn., and then Interstate 81 south to reconnect with Interstate 40. It is about 130 miles from the I-81/I-40 interchange to Asheville via that route. Eastbound I-40 traffic in Tennessee is being re-routed onto I-81 north to Johnson City, then to I-26 eastbound to I-40 in Asheville, according to the Tennessee Highway Patrol. The interstate is closed at mile marker 451 in Tennessee. Alternative Route into Tennessee, via the Great Smoky Mountains National Park: This route is not listed at VisitNC.com at this time, but it is filled with beautiful scenery and the drive requires less time and mileage than routing folks to I-26W Madison County, toward Newport if they are going to Pigeon Forge, Gatlinburg, or Knoxville, TN. Please note that this route will not work for commercial traffic due to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GSMNP) restrictions. Also, as winter approaches, all motorists are encouraged to call the GSMNP @ 865-436-1200, ext. 631 for possible road closures within the Park. GSMNP road information can also be obtained on their website, www.nps.gov From Asheville travelers can merge onto US-74 W via EXIT 27, take US-441 via EXIT 74, remain on Hwy 441N through Cherokee to Gatlinburg, TN. US-441 N becomes PARKWAY, left on PARKWAY, turn right onto FORKS OF THE RIVER PKWY/US-441/TN-71/CHAPMAN HWY SE., turn left onto W MAIN ST/US-411 S/US-441 N/TN-35 S/TN-71 N. Continue to follow US-441 N/TN-71 N.
